iPad 2 vs. BlackBerry PlayBook browser battle

iPad 2 vs. BlackBerry PlayBook browser battle!

As part of his BlackBerry PlayBook review, CrackBerry.com?s Kevin Michaluk put RIM?s new tablet browser one-on-one against Apple?s iPad 2.

When we put the PlayBook head to head against the iPad 2 in a browser shootout (see below), we saw pretty comparable page load times but did notice on websites where there were flash-based advertisements present, this would slow down the PlayBook by a few seconds while the iPad 2 would serve up a faster loading static image. Disabling flash evened out the load times.

Check out the video after the break and if you haven?t already, check out the rest of Crackberry?s PlayBook coverage.

White iPhone 4 shipping in the next few weeks?

White iPhone 4

After 10 long, long months Bloomberg says Apple will finally ? finally ? be ready to ship the near mythical white iPhone 4 in just a few short weeks. Phew!

The new version will be available from AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless by the end of April, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren?t public. The release was stalled as Apple resolved manufacturing challenges, including paint that peeled under heat, one person said.

The white iPhone 4 suffered delay after delay until Apple pushed it back all the way to ?spring?. Lots of different theories circulated as to what was causing the problem, including the white color messing up the proximity sensor, the flash, and other issues. Further rumors suggested Apple even switched painting processes to help fix the problem

So who will be crying unicorn tears as they pick up this baby? Or is it too little color, too late in the product life cycle?

And who thinks Apple releasing the white iPhone 4 now helps fill the void left by rumors of iPhone 5 only coming in the fall?

Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

?Consumers have quickly transformed smartphones into consumer lifestyle hubs ? pocket-sized entertainment centers that enable people to take their favorite multimedia content with them wherever they go. Premium Design and Materials

Tapping into HTC?s trademark design language, the HTC Sensation 4G?s premium look and feel is enhanced by its rounded edges and aluminum unibody construction, and the touch screen surface is protected by a contoured screen that feels more natural as a finger glides across it. The 4.3-inch qHD display delivers high-resolution widescreen viewing and gives the HTC Sensation 4G slender proportions that feel natural in a person?s hand. At the heart of the HTC Sensation 4G beats a powerful, 1.2-gigahertz, dual-core, Qualcomm® Snapdragon? processor, which enables gorgeous graphics and all-around fast performance.

HTC Sense

Complementing the HTC Sensation 4G?s premium design is the latest HTC Sense experience that boasts a host of new features and enhancements, helping people have more fun and get more done. For instance, HTC Sense introduces a customizable active lock screen experience that transforms the lock screen into a real-time window to the most important information and content, such as social updates, photos, weather or stock updates that are viewed by simply waking up the display. In addition, the new active lock screen becomes a customizable gateway, which lets people quickly jump to the most-used features, such as making a phone call, sending an email, taking a picture or anything else, with the same quick gesture usually used to unlock the phone. For instance, the camera can be launched right from the lock screen with a single motion, saving precious seconds when you?re trying to capture the action. Sharper graphics, vibrant animations and new widgets make HTC Sense look better than ever and, by continuing to focus on all of the aspects, both large and small, that make HTC Sense special, HTC introduces a more cinematic and immersive weather experience with stunning imagery and audible weather effects.

HTC Sense also makes it easy to have fun by enabling people to capture and share special moments. The HTC Sensation 4G?s 8-megapixel camera doesn?t just shoot gorgeous photos ? with the new instant capture feature, it lets people capture the moments they want without worrying about missing or keeping up with the action. The HTC Sensation also shoots full HD video in 1080p resolution, with full stereo sound, at up to 30 frames per second, giving you smooth video that is better than many other phones. With the new Video Trimmer tool, people can crop their clips to the perfect size for easy sharing with friends and family.

HTC Watch

The HTC Sensation 4G is a smartphone that is built from the ground up for a sophisticated, evolved multimedia experience. The 4.3-inch widescreen display means that users can watch movies like they were meant to be seen ? in their full cinematic glory, with no cropping or letterboxing. The HTC Sensation 4G is also the first smartphone to feature HTC Watch ? an application and service that puts an entire library of the latest, premium movies and TV shows right at your fingertips, letting people discover the latest video content in an easy and visually engaging way. HTC Watch uses progressive download technology that makes it possible to watch videos without waiting for a huge file to finish downloading. HTC Watch offers the choice of renting or buying videos and, if purchased, lets you watch them on up to five different HTC devices.

Eye-Fi Launches Direct Mode With 8GB Mobile X2 SD Card

Hearing that Flip's camcorder line was being shut down today by Cisco was quite the shock. But when you look at a company like Eye-Fi, one has to wonder what makes one niche startup more viable than the other. Eye-Fi has been an underground success story, never quite hitting the mainstream, but obviously popular enough amongst the tech junkies to keep a good thing going. The company's new Mobile X2 card is an 8GB Secure Digital card that allows for instant uploads anywhere by wirelessly connecting the camera to a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet.

The new feature is Direct Mode, which pairs up with iOS or Android and uses an existing wireless radio to transmit pictures from anywhere. It offloads the wireless duties from the card to a device, and given the proliferation of wireless devices out there with embedded 3G or Wi-Fi, this is probably for the best. The card is also just $79.99, and the Direct Mode apps will be free of charge. The Eye-Fi card can now establish a direct connection to the mobile device by creating its own Wi-Fi network anywhere users capture memories, even if that is miles from a Wi-Fi hotspot. Whether they are hiking or at the beach, consumers can now send photos and videos directly from their digital camera to the Eye-Fi app on their smartphone or tablet, enabling them to back up, edit and share their memories in the moment.

Direct Mode benefits extend beyond device-to-device transfers. Whether users want to edit their memories using the myriad of apps on their mobile devices, back them up on their home computer, or save them in a private Eye-Fi account, they now have the flexibility and control of where, how and when the media is stored, edited and shared. Eye-Fi Mobile X2 is available for pre-orders immediately on Amazon.com, and available at Apple and Best Buy stores nationwide for $79.99 on April 17, 2011. Direct Mode will be available as a free upgrade to all Eye-Fi X2 cards later this week, along with accompanying free mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Furthermore, the Eye-Fi Pro X2 will be reduced from $149.99 to $99.99 starting this month.

WWDC 2011 ticket for sale on EBAY

Yesterday, WWDC 2011 sold out in a record 10 hours and now one of those tickets has popped up on EBAY with a Buy It Now price of $3,500. That?s $1901 more than the original $1,599 price set by Apple. The seller claims that this ticket was purchased for a colleague who ended up not being able to make the event.

We expect Apple will put an end to this auction in a heartbeat. The last thing Apple wants is for people to snatch up tickets and turn them over for a profit.

What do you think? Are you angry at this dev for trying to make a buck off this ?extra? ticket?
